Victory II
acrylic + oil on canvas90 × 110 cm2025
If my interpretation of 'The Thinker' represents the quiet, empowering strength of the pause, the 'Winged Victory of Samothrace' is the profound triumph that follows. In creating this piece, I drew deep inspiration from the philosopher and psychologist Jordan Peterson, particularly his thoughts on virtue. He argues that simply being harmless or incapable of asserting yourself is not morality; it is just weakness. True virtue, and genuine self-control, only hold value when you are a formidable force who possesses the capacity for darkness, yet consciously chooses restraint over impulsive aggression.
In this painting, I reimagine the classical Nike of Samothrace to capture that exact manifestation of controlled strength. She stands resilient against a vibrant, tumultuous background—a visual metaphor for the chaos, the storms, and the external manipulations we navigate. Her triumph is not born from aggressive conflict, but from that emotionally intelligent pause. She possesses the power to react and destroy, yet she chooses the higher, more difficult path of mastering her own spirit instead.
The heavy, classical drapes blowing against the wind represent the weight of the battles we face, yet her wings remain fully spread, unapologetic and majestic. This work is a celebration of true autonomy. It is a reminder that when we master our own darkness and choose to respond rather than react, we emerge genuinely victorious, earning the ultimate right to be the absolute authors of our own lives.
